Report Claims Dozens of Iran-Linked Tankers Evaded US Maritime Restrictions

(MENAFN) According to reports, at least 34 tankers with connections to Iran have managed to bypass US-imposed maritime restrictions since the enforcement of the blockade began.

The Financial Times reported that Washington started implementing the blockade on April 13, initially targeting vessels entering or leaving Iranian coastal waters. By April 16, the scope was expanded to include Iranian ships operating in international waters, as well as vessels suspected of transporting materials linked to Iran’s military activities.

US forces have reportedly taken direct action in several cases, including the seizure of a container ship in the Gulf of Oman and the boarding of a sanctioned tanker operating in the Indo-Pacific region.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated on Tuesday that American forces have instructed 28 vessels to either turn back or return to their point of origin since the restrictions were introduced.

In comments made during a CNBC interview the same day, former US President Donald Trump described the operation as highly effective, saying, "The blockade has been a tremendous success,” and added that the embargo on the Strait of Hormuz would remain in place until a “final deal” with Iran is reached.

Despite these measures, the report indicated that multiple vessels have still evaded enforcement. At least 19 tankers associated with Iran reportedly exited the Gulf, while another 15 entered it via routes from the Arabian Sea heading toward Iranian ports.

Among the departing vessels, at least six were said to be transporting Iranian crude oil, totaling approximately 10.7 million barrels. Based on estimated pricing, the cargo value—assuming a $10 per barrel discount compared to Brent crude—would amount to roughly $910 million.

Tensions between Washington and Tehran escalated after military strikes launched by the US and Israel on February 28, which were followed by Iranian retaliatory actions targeting US bases and assets across the Middle East.

Later developments included high-level discussions between US and Iranian officials hosted in Islamabad on April 11–12, marking the first direct engagement since diplomatic relations were severed in 1979.
