Iran Confirms First Revenue from New Strait of Hormuz Transit Fees

(MENAFN) Iran says it has received its first revenue from tolls imposed on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical routes for global energy shipments, according to reports.

Parliament Deputy Speaker Hamidreza Haji Babaei stated that “first revenues from transit fees in the Strait of Hormuz have been deposited into the Central Bank account,” as cited by the semi-official Tasnim News Agency.

Another lawmaker, Alireza Salimi, also confirmed that Iran has begun collecting charges from vessels using the strategic waterway, though he referred to unspecified “reliable sources” for the information.

According to reports, the fees vary depending on cargo type, shipment volume, and assessed risk levels for each vessel. Iranian authorities are responsible for setting both the pricing structure and collection procedures, although no official figures were provided on how many ships have already been charged.

Earlier reports suggested that Tehran had moved to strengthen its control over maritime traffic in the Strait, with vessels reportedly required to arrange advance payment arrangements through channels linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and, in some cases, settle payments using cryptocurrency or Chinese yuan.

Additional reporting indicated that legislative discussions have taken place regarding formalizing a fee system for ships passing through the corridor.

Shipping activity through the Strait of Hormuz has been significantly disrupted since the escalation of conflict involving Iran earlier this year, contributing to volatility in global energy markets and concerns over supply stability.

In parallel developments, the US administration recently extended a ceasefire arrangement with Iran, reportedly following diplomatic mediation efforts, with the
pause in hostilities set to remain in place pending further proposals from Tehran.
