Turkey Condemns Interception of Gaza-Bound Aid Flotilla as “Piracy”

(MENAFN) Hakan Fidan has strongly condemned Israel’s interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters, describing the operation as “piracy” and a violation of international law.

Speaking at a joint press conference in Berlin with his German counterpart Johann Wadephul, Fidan said Turkey was in contact with the countries whose citizens were aboard the vessels and is working to secure the release of those detained.

He said the flotilla, which was carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza and included participants from around 40 countries, was targeted in what he described as an unlawful action against civilian activists.

Fidan also reiterated Turkey’s position that resolving the Palestinian issue through a two-state framework is essential for regional peace and stability, arguing that ongoing conflict in Gaza and the wider region remains a central driver of instability.

He accused Israel’s policies of exacerbating tensions across the Middle East, including in Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, and Syria, warning that the consequences extend beyond the region and have broader global implications, including impacts on Europe through migration and energy security concerns.

According to reports, Israeli forces intercepted the flotilla—comprising more than 50 boats—while it was en route to Gaza and detained around 100 activists involved in the mission.
