Montgomery County to Announce Major Investment in Historic Building to Create New Childcare Facility

Publish Date: 9/20/2022

Former School Facility to be Converted into Childcare Facility, Office Space

WHAT: On Tuesday, September 27, 2022 at 11:00am, Montgomery County Executive Matthew Ossenfort, members of the County Legislature and local officials will gather to announce a major investment in the historic Nelliston School, which will again become a resource for children in the community.

Opened to students just a few years after the end of the Civil War and listed on the National Historic Registry (ID#02001645), the Nelliston School operated as a place of learning for area children for over 100 years before closing in 1974. Today, the property is owned by the Village of Nelliston, which has been exploring ways to modernize the facility so it can again serve local children and the community at-large.

According to a 2020 study conducted by the Montgomery County Business Development Center, 41 percent of county households are occupied by single parents and 44 percent of individuals surveyed stated it was difficult to find childcare arrangements in Montgomery County.
According to the Montgomery County Department of Health, the Villages of Nelliston and Canajoharie each have no daycare providers, while the Village of Fort Plain has one and the Village of Palatine Bridge has two.

Earlier this year, State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $50,000 SAM grant to assist with the project.
