Macron, Qatar’s Emir Talk Defense, Investment Amid Hormuz Crisis

(MENAFN) French President Emmanuel Macron and Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani met Tuesday to push for deeper economic, investment and defense ties, a sign of Paris and Doha’s drive to harden their strategic partnership as tensions grip the Gulf.

The leaders met at Lusail Palace in Doha, the emir’s office, the Amiri Diwan, said in a statement.

They reviewed bilateral relations and explored ways to widen collaboration in security, defense and other priority sectors. They also discussed regional developments.

Sheikh Tamim welcomed Macron’s visit as proof of the strength of ties between the two countries and voiced hope for closer cooperation across a range of fields. Macron, the statement said, reaffirmed France’s commitment to expanding its partnership with Qatar.

Before the formal talks began, the two men held a separate one-on-one meeting on bilateral relations and regional developments.

Macron flew into Doha from Bahrain, part of a Gulf tour that also covers Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates. The French presidency said the Oct. 19-21 trip is meant to strengthen strategic and economic partnerships with Gulf states and to support efforts to restore regional stability and freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

The visit comes against a backdrop of regional turmoil after the US and Israel launched a war against Iran on Feb. 28. Tehran retaliated with missile and drone attacks across the region and effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz. Washington later imposed a naval blockade on Iranian ports.
